Message from our PTO President

Hello, Kennedy Community!

As we settle into the school year, I’d like to explain exactly what the PTO is and why you should care about joining us. If you want to have a direct impact on your child’s academic, social and emotional life at school, the PTO is for you!

What is the PTO?

“PTO” stands for “Parent Teacher Organization.” Whether you are a parent, guardian, or extended family member of a Kennedy student, YOU are automatically a member of the Kennedy PTO! We are a nonprofit volunteer organization whose mission is to help students thrive and grow during middle school. This means that your voice matters and you can actively participate in your child’s education.

Why is the PTO Important at Kennedy?

Kennedy offers an array of programs to support our students’ social, emotional, physical, and academic needs, many of which are funded by the efforts of the PTO. Our amazing elective programs, Art, Drama, Music and STEAM, all receive monetary support from the PTO’s fundraising.

Kennedy Middle School is also a community school, a special designation given to a limited number of “full service” schools in Redwood City where educational success is achieved by addressing any social and economic barriers to learning. To this end, the Kennedy PTO’s fundraising also supports our Kennedy Family Center located on campus.

How Can You Help?

The great thing about the Kennedy PTO is that you can be involved as much or as little as you’d like – whatever fits your availability, interests and talents! The PTO is a team effort and no one works alone. All of our leadership roles find us working in small groups to put on activities and events, fundraise, and make Kennedy the best it can be for the students, teachers and staff!

Do you love books and literacy? Help out with the KMS Book Fair in November. Are you a fabulous party planner? Join the Student Activities team to help organize 2 school dances. Do you want to see lots of students showing their school spirit with KMS gear? Assist with the school spirit wear webpage. Are you motivated to seek out creative ways to fundraise to keep our elective programs thriving? Join the fundraising team. AND SO MUCH MORE!

Here are some other key PTO roles we are looking to fill:

  • 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade-Level Community Leaders – Work with PTO to communicate needs and ideas for each grade level. Ensure parents know what’s happening in each grade.
  • Parent Volunteer Coordinator – Create sign-up forms and help recruit and coordinate volunteers for PTO and school events.
  • Safe Routes To School Coordinator – Work with PTO to encourage students to bike and walk to school. Help kids with traffic safety skills and work to reduce traffic congestion.
  • STEAM Liaison – Work with KMS STEAM Program lead teacher to support the program. Coordinate family volunteers for program activities as needed.
  • Student Activities Coordinator – Help plan two school dances
(October & March); organize DJ, food, and decorations, and recruit volunteers.

Do you have other ideas or feedback around making the Kennedy Middle School experience extra-special for students? Please contact us directly and let’s chat! info@kennedycougarspto.org

Finally, everyone is invited to our next PTO meeting on Tuesday, September 26, from 7:00-8:00 pm via Zoom.

Kennedy offers an array of programs to support our students’ social, emotional, physical and academic needs, many of which are funded by the efforts of the PTO.

PTO News: 8/14 – 8/20

BACK TO SCHOOL!

First day of the 2023-2024 school year is this Wednesday, August 16, 8:30AM! Here is arrival and dismissal information from Mrs. Leonardo to ensure a smooth return for students, parents & staff. Welcome back, Kennedy!

Kennedy gates open at 8:00 am. Students need to be dropped off in the main front parking lot and enter the black gates near the end of the driveway and drop-off zone.

Campus supervisors begin supervising students at 8:00 am. Students will not be allowed to enter campus before 8:00 am without supervision. Students should refrain from loitering in groups in front of the school and near our neighbors’ yards.

As you drop off your students, please be aware of students crossing the street. Please remind your students to walk their bikes and scooters on sidewalks. Please refrain from pulling in and out of neighbors’ driveways.

White-painted curbs along Goodwin, Connecticut, Maddux, and Washington Avenues are also drop-off zones. Please be aware of the bus loading zones. Avoid parking in the bus zone on Goodwin Avenue near the school office. Avoid parking in the SamTrans loading zone on Washington Avenue. Kennedy staff will ask drivers to move if they are parked in loading zones before buses arrive.

For safety reasons, students have one entry point in the morning between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. After 8:30 am., students must enter through the front office for a late pass.

Students can lock bikes and scooters in the bike rack. The bike rack closes at 8:30 am. Skateboards can be left in the school office and picked up after school. Please wear a helmet!

Public transportation is provided through SamTrans. Route 79 is for Kennedy students only. In the mornings, students are dropped off by 8:15 am. In the afternoons, students are picked up by 3:25 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On Thursday afternoons, students are picked up by 2:00 pm.

The SamTrans bus stop is located on Washington Avenue near the Boys and Girls Club entrance. Kennedy staff will guide students to the bus stop and monitor them after school until SamTrans arrives.

The SamTrans bus schedule can be accessed on page 10 of the Maze Day packet. Click here to view.

At dismissal, students can exit from any unlocked gate. If you are picking up your student, be sure to tell them where you plan to pick them up.

Bell Schedule

There will be no block schedule during the first week of school. Students will attend periods 1-7 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Our 6th-graders will have separate brunch and lunch breaks from their 7th and 8th-grade peers.

School dismissal is 3:15 pm.

Minimum Day dismissal is 1:50 pm. on Thursday.

The bell schedules for each grade level can be found on pages five and six of our Maze Day packet. Click here to view.

School Materials

Students should have the materials listed above each school day. If families need support getting these materials, please contact our Family Center. School Chromebooks will be distributed the week of August 28, so Chromebooks will not be needed for the first two weeks.
